This Tech Perspective analyzes trends in the growing global smartphone market at the business, system, and semiconductor levels. Presented jointly by Portelligent and Semiconductor Insights at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 12, 2008, the presentation "Evolution of the Smartphone -- Systems to Semiconductors" features in-depth analyses of multiple generations of top-selling smartphones from HTC and Nokia. The study reveals that over successive product generations HTC and Nokia have employed different approaches to adding functionality to their devices. HTC has pursued a SoC (System-on-Chip) and SiP (System-in-Package) strategy to reduce the total number of ICs per phone while increasing functionality. By comparison, Nokia has increased its total dice count, but currently has a board size and cost advantage over HTC.
Both Portelligent and Semiconductor Insights are now CMP companies. For further background on the joint smartphone study, or for details on CMP, Portelligent, and Semiconductor Insights, a press release is available here. |
