Trends in Cellular Phone Camera Modules
Trends in Cellular Phone Camera Modules

Introduction

With 8MP camera phones available during the last year and 12MP camera phones slated for launch in the fourth quarter of 2009, the megapixel race in cellular phones has accelerated to the same rapid pace previously reserved for DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras.

While the megapixel war heats up in the cellular phone market, the latest wave of touchscreen and QWERTY messaging cellular phones is putting pressure on all cellular phone manufacturers to shrink the physical dimensions of the device affording less and less space for the latest generation camera modules.

In spite of the opposing forces, camera module manufacturers have responded with increasing resolutions in smaller form factors.

Report Description

Through the use of TechInsights teardowns, this report will examine cellular phone trends in primary camera resolution; device dimensions including volume, thickness, and frontal area; and camera module dimensions including volume, thickness, and frontal area. The report will also examine the dimensional relationships between the cellular phone and the camera module found within the device.

Leveraging the historical trend data obtained through the teardown process, we forecast primary camera resolution, phone dimensions, camera module dimensions, and the phone / camera module volume relationship through 2013.

The report will answer the following critical questions:

  • What is the current trend in camera resolutions in cellular phones and what is the expected camera resolution forecast for the next five years?
  • How are the camera module dimensions in cellular phones affected by the camera resolution?
  • As the physical volume of cellular phones shrinks, is the thickness or frontal area having a bigger impact on volume?
  • After the launch of a new camera resolution, how do the physical dimensions of the camera modules in cellular phones change over time?
