Cloud Engines Pogoplug POGO-E02 Internet File Sharing Appliance:   On November 20, 2009 San Francisco-based Cloud Engines, Inc released the second generation of their Pogoplug, which allows user to share media content and information over the Internet. Up to 4 USB storage devices, an external hard drive, and/or memory sticks, can be connected to the Pogoplug and accessed from anywhere via the Internet. The unit retails for $129.00 - registration is free on their web site and there are no monthly charges for the service. The Pogoplug is compatible with both PC and Mac operating systems and web browsers. The source code is open to promote user experimentation and development and there are currently Pogoplug apps for the Android and iPhone.

Bayer Contour USB Blood Glucose Monitor:   The Bayer Contour USB Blood Glucose Meter is the first “Plug-n-Play” blood glucose meter with integrated monitoring software. Testing with this USB computer-interfaced device takes about five seconds, with only a small sample of blood (about 0.6 uL). The meter stores up to two thousand tests results to enable patients to manage their blood sugar levels and provide their doctor with daily results, including date and time information, for both and after meals. The Contour USB has 2000-test result storage and 500MB of free memory for user data. The Contour can be recharged with an included AC charging adapter or thru an active USB computer port.

3M Littmann 3200 Electronic Stethoscope:   The 3M-Littmann Model 3200 Electronic Stethoscope is the next generation of technology offered by 3M™ - Littmann. When used with the included Zargis ® StethAssist™ software auscultation of Heart and Lung functions can be monitored and transmitted via Bluetooth® to a computer in real-time with visual interpretation and subsequently shared with peers for analysis or attached to medical records for future review and comparison. With 3M’s improved and patented soft and hard “Snap Tight” eartip materials ambient noise is reduced by a reported 85%. Sounds can be amplified or reduced for clarity with volume control keys located near the display. The Stethoscope uses a single AA battery. There is a Battery Life Indicator on the display which will begin to blink when only a few hours of battery capacity remains.

Autonet Mobile Cellular WiFi Router:   Autonet Mobile’s AS-BUSRTR-03 CDMA-EvDO/WiFi cellular router for vehicular applications provides remote internet access while on the move. Employing a technology Autonet calls “TRU Link” the router monitors such things as signal strength, packet loss, latency, and speeds to detect when a signal needs to be refreshed, or a new tower connection needs to be made, thus eliminating dropped connections. Up to 10 devices can be connected to the router simultaneously and it can be located anywhere in a vehicle. No special software is required. It works with any operating system and is claimed to operate at speeds from 400 to 800Kbps. The release of new apps and services are promised from Autonet without the need for hardware upgrades. A monthly service fee of $29-$59USD is required for 1GB and 5GB data plans respectively along with the $350-$400 hardware purchase price.

Apple iPad 3G A1337 Tablet Computer:   As a follow on to the Apple WiFi model, the cellular-data enabled iPad 3G was released to market on April 30, 2010. As with the WiFi version of the iPad, it appears to be a an oversized - but more capable - iPod Touch, and features WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR connectivity and the added 3G capabilities for true cellular data portability. The large 9.7” TFT-LCD display (16M colors, 1024 x 768 pixels) uses IPS (in-plane switching) technology to enhance the viewing angle. The display is overlaid with a multi-touch capacitive touchscreen containing a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating. The large two-cell battery (3.75V, 6.61Ah) provides a claimed use time of 10 hours and standby time of 730 hours.

Motorola USBw25100 WiMAX USB Data Modem:   The USBw25100 “USB dongle” adapter, offered exclusively through CLEAR Wireless, is a 4G WiMAX data modem from Motorola. The USBw25100 offers wireless 4G WiMAX connectivity and internet access on-the-go anywhere within CLEAR’s coverage area. The USB adapter is compatible with Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS 10.5 or higher operating systems, is small in size, measuring slightly more than 90 mm in length and weighs just under 25 grams. CLEAR claims and average download speed of 3-6 Mbps and (as of 2Q 2010) has coverage in major cities in 10 states.

The WiFi-only version is analyzed in this report but the 3G version which became available at the end of April 2010 will be coming soon in a follow-up teardown report. Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000 UMTS Touchscreen Phone:   Debuting in Singapore, the Galaxy S GT-I9000 is among a number of phones named under the Galaxy umbrella including four US variants as follows: AT&T Captivate, T-Mobile Vibrant, Sprint Epic 4G, and Verizon Fascinate. One of the first phones to be powered by Samsung’s 1 GHz Hummingbird Applications Processor, the GT-I9000 employs the latest Android 2.1 (Eclair) OS (upgradeable to 2.2). The GT-I9000 analyzed in this report operates on Quad-band GSM/EDGE and Band I/II/VIII W-CDMA/HSDPA/HSUPA networks. The design includes 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, A-GPS with navigation, and FM Radio. Compared to AMOLED displays, the 4.0 in. “Super” AMOLED display (16 million colors, 480 x 800 pixels, chip-in-glass) boasts 20% greater brightness, 80% less sunlight reflection, and 20% lower power consumption. A multi-touch capacitive touchscreen overlays the display and responds with haptic feedback. The rear-facing autofocus main camera is 5 MP with HD video recording; the front-facing secondary camera is VGA quality and used for making video calls. Providing a claimed active battery life of 13 hrs and 250 hrs on standby, the GT-I9000 is supplied with a 3.7 V / 1500 mAh Li-ion Polymer battery.

Microsoft-Sharp KIN ONE Dual-band CDMA Phone:   The KIN-ONE is a very compact slide-form phone with a focus on Mobile Networking. While discontinued in a matter of weeks (along with the co-launched KIN TWO) it was geared toward a younger media-smart audience. As with the KIN TWO, the KIN ONE offers Microsoft’s KIN interface and service to provide instant and constant access to contacts and social networking sites. Both models offer access to music, video, FM radio, and podcast playbacks with a PC Zune subscription and all can be shared by using the drag & drop Spot feature located at the center of the home screen. There is instant “cloud” backup as well with the Studio feature. The KIN-ONE has a 5MP camera, a 2.6in. QVGA Capacitive Touch-screen, WiFi, Bluetooth®, and 3G data service.

Microsoft-Sharp KIN Two Dual-band CDMA Phone:   The KIN TWO slide-form, “cloud-centric” phone is made by Sharp for Microsoft with an emphasis on socializing. After a brief run with distribution via carrier Verizon, the KIN lineup was abruptly terminated by Microsoft in July 2010. The now-defunct design includes a 3.4” HVGA LCD, an 8MP camera & video recorder with auto-focus, anti-shake, and an LED flash. 8GB of memory is on board to support music, photos & videos, as well as the instant network-based backup “cloud” feature called Studio which automatically backs up all texts, photos, videos, and contacts as created. All content was available for viewing and sharing with the drag and drop Spot feature located at the center of the home screen. With a Zune subscription on a PC, a user could also access music, video, FM, and podcast playback.

HTC ADR6300 Droid Incredible UMTS Phone:   HTC incorporates the Google Android™ OS, Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon™ processor, and their own Sense™ user interface in the Droid Incredible Touch-screen Smartphone with dual-band CDMA-EVDO Rev.A support. The Incredible is Bluetooth and WiFi equipped. There is an 8.0MP camera, with auto-focus and dual LED flash, for photo taking and video recording/playback at .3gp. There is 8GB of onboard memory with a microSD card slot for up to 32GB expansion. A micro USB port for data transfer and battery recharging is available, and there is a 3.5mm headset connector for stereo music listening. Also present is a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch-screen and an Optical Joystick to quickly scroll through menu selections, contacts, internet, or messages. More details are given on the next slide. There is a stated 5.2 hours of active use and 146 hours of standby operation on the OEM 3.7V / 1300mAh Li-Ion battery.

HTC EVO 4G CDMA/WiMAX Touchscreen Phone:   The Sprint branded EVO 4G from HTC is an Android based, dual band CDMA camera phone with 8MP image sensor with flash. This social media geared phone is WiMAX enabled, allowing the user higher data speeds in areas providing 4G coverage. With Sprints’ Hot Spot™, the EVO can act as a WiFi router allowing other WiFi enabled devices to connect to the internet through the EVO. Rounding out the wireless capabilities is Bluetooth, GPS and FM Radio. The user interface for the EVO is a 4.3-inch WVGA display with capacitive touchscreen and an inward facing 1.3MP camera allows for self portraits and video calling.

Nokia 6788i TD-SCDMA Phone:   The Nokia 6788i is a tri-band GSM and dual-band TD-SCDMA phone with a Symbian operating system. This Z-axis slider phone was developed for the Chinese market, with service provided by China Mobile. On the back of the device is a 5MP camera equipped with autofocus and Zeiss Optics lenses. The camera is capable of capturing both still photos and video. The camera and adjacent flash are protected by a lens cover that can be closed when the camera is not in use. The 6788i has 4GB of integrated user memory, with additional storage supplied by the microSD card slot located beneath the back cover. The phone also has an FM radio receiver with presets, an integrated music player, and Bluetooth capability.

Apple iPhone 4 A1332 UMTS Touchscreen Phone:   Apple released their fourth-generation iPhone 4 (not to be confused as being 4G capable) in late June 2010, coinciding with their latest iOS upgrade to 4.0. Operating on quad-band GSM + EDGE and quad-band W-CDMA + HSDPA / HSUPA (850/900/1900/2100 MHz) networks, the iPhone 4 is enhanced with higher resolutions for both display (960 x 640 up from 480 x 320) and main camera (5MP up from 3MP) with HD video recording capability. Apple also introduced a front-facing VGA camera for making conference calls from iPhone-to-iPhone via their new FaceTime chat application. The 3.7V/1420mAh Li-polymer battery provides a claimed 14 hours of GSM talk time, but only 7 hours for W-CDMA; standby time is rated at 300 hours. Other features include WiFi 802.11b/g/n (802.11n is 2.4GHz only), Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, and A-GPS with navigation.

Alcatel OT-800 Tri-band GSM/EDGE Cellular Phone:   With its full-QWERTY keypad and 2.2” TFT Display, the OT-800 from Alcatel is an entry-level feature phone with emphasis on texting and social networking applications. A built-in accelerometer enables “shake control” and enhances the gaming experience, while the 2.0MP camera allows the user to capture photographs and video. Data transfer is accomplished via USB and Bluetooth, and up to 4GB MicroSD memory is supported. Stereo FM Radio is also included. Limited web browsing is available via the WAP 2.0 Browser and EDGE data connectivity. The manufacturer claims up to 9 hours talk time from an 850mAh Li-Ion Battery.

Samsung TL220 Dual-screen 12MP Digital Camera:   The Samsung DualView TL220 camera has two displays: a 1.5” TFT (61K pixel) in the front and a 3” 960 [320RGB] x 240 (230K pixel) in the back. The back display also incorporates a touch-sensitive screen with haptic feedback. The front display is primarily for self-portraits; when using the timer, there’s a visual countdown for the last few seconds before the photo is taken. The front screen can also be used in “Child Mode,” which provides built-in animation to keep small children’s attention while taking photos of them. This compact camera employs a 12.2MP, 1/2.3” CCD image sensor with a 27mm Schneider-KREUZNACH lens and 4.6x optical zoom. Other features include dual image stabilization (optical & digital), Smart Auto mode, face recognition, and HD video.

Canon Rebel EOS T1a 15.1MP DSLR Digital Camera:   The new Canon “Rebel” T1i has the same body and many of the same features as the more expensive XSi. With a 15.1MP CMOS sensor and a 3-in. anti-reflective, scratch-resistant LCD, the SLR camera supports full HD video capture at 1920 x 1080 pixels and is compatible with over 60 Canon lenses. The lens included in the kit is an EF-S 18-55mm IS with optical image stabilization. Other body features include peripheral illumination correction for vignetting, an auto-lighting optimizer, ISO expansion to 12800, face-detection autofocus modes, Canon’s Creative Auto modes, and a dust-reduction automatic sensor cleaning system.

Sony DSC-TX7 10MP Digital Camera:   The new Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 camera, along with its big brother the DSC-HX5V, are the first compact digital still cameras to support full HD (1920x1080 @ 60i) Advanced Video Coding High-Definition (AVCHD) video format. Both models were introduced by Sony in January 2010, and are the first Cyber-shots with in-camera Backlight Correction High Dynamic Range (HDR) for better lighting management. The TX7 (analyzed here) uses Sony’s 10.2MP “Exmor R” back-illuminated CMOS image sensor and a Carl Zeiss 25mm wide angle lens with 4x optical zoom. Other features include 10fps burst shooting, Intelligent Sweep Panorama for automatically stitching wide angle shots, 17 shooting modes, and a 3.5” TFT display with touchscreen.

BenQ K60 e-Reader:   Hot off the press, the “nReader” K60 is the first e-book reader from Taiwan’s BenQ. With a 6.1-in. touchscreen-driven electronic paper display and WiFi connectivity, the K60 enables the online purchase of e-books through a Taiwan-based partner. Additional data transfer may be accomplished via a USB connection, and up to 16GB microSD memory is supported. Audio files may be played over a single built-in speaker or through the stereo headphone jack. The 3.7V, 1530mAh Li-Polymer battery is USB-chargeable, and the manufacturer claims approximately two weeks of normal use from a full charge.

DUO KD-17 Pen Input Appliance:   The Duo accessory is an accessory for bringing pen-input capability to a laptop (or really any PC). Along with applications such as graphic art design directly on a computer screen, the device is shipped with an ink pen tip allowing the user to make a computer copy of a hand written note. Other features include annotating personal or web documents with different shapes and/or lines. Documents can be filled out by hand and converted to ASCII with integrated hand writing recognition. Right and left clicks normally done with a mouse are integrated into the pen. The device can be quickly removed from the host PC, restoring the device to its original state.

Motorola CPEi25150 WiMAX Wireless Modem:   With ever-expanding coverage from new towers, high-speed wireless Internet communication via WiMAX is becoming a viable alternative to Cable/DSL or satellite. The Motorola CPEi25150 (sometimes referred to as the CPEi150) is an indoor desktop WiMAX modem designed for plug-and-play functionality. The modem is Wave 2 certified and operates on a frequency of 2.5GHz, with a range of up to 2 kilometers. Under optimum conditions, throughput in excess of 5Mbps for download and 2Mbps for upload can be expected. The unit is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

IOGEAR GUWAVKIT Wireless HD A/V Kit:   The IOGEAR GUWAVKIT is a wireless audio/video system for the PC. The USB adapter connects to the source, using the provided IOGEAR software. It is capable of broadcasting up to 720p video, at up to WSXGA+ (1680x1050) source resolution, with 32-bit true color. The VGA adapter is capable of connecting with multiple hosts. The Audio adapter is compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.0 protocols and the stated range of the devices is ~30ft. Data can be exchanged at a maximum of 480Mbps over a seven-channel spectrum with security implemented via 128-bit AES encryption.
