Product Description

Reported to be the world’s first satellite-only messenger, Spot is a hand-held personal GPS locator. GPS tracking is accomplished through the global GPS satellite network and uplink signals (with GPS coordinates) are sent to Globalstar’s 48-satellite constellation. Emergency beacons are routed to the GEOS Emergency Response Center and non-emergency beacons can be sent to other users to indicate an ‘all’s well’ or position fix where one can be tracked by Google Maps for locating the user. Spot has four modes of operation: “911” for life-threatening emergencies, “Help” for emergency assistance, “Check In” for letting others know that all is well, and “Track Progress,” which sends location data to a Spot account every 10 minutes for up to 24 hours. Spot is capable of working most anywhere in the world where a clear view of the sky is available and comes in a ruggedized waterproof case which floats. It has a reported standby battery life of 12 months using two “AA” Lithium batteries. Spot is shipping in the US and Europe as of early 2008.
