Amazon Kindle Fire D01400 Tablet & E-Reader

The Kindle Fire is Amazon’s tablet entry targeted at the e-Reader market but with capabilities to go well beyond those of previous Kindle devices. The Fire’s width is smaller than the Kindle DX and comparable to the smaller e-Ink Kindles, which makes it easy to hold in one hand. Its 7 inch touchscreen display has over 16 million colors and utilizes the in-plane switching LCD technology seen in other tablets such as the infamous iPad. The modified Android 2.3 OS runs on a dual-core processor with 8 GB of user memory storage. The Fire does not currently have cellular or Bluetooth options, relying only on WiFi 802.11n for web browsing with Amazon’s Silk web browser. Apps, games, and e-books are all available for use, play, and reading through Amazon, and apps directly from the Android market are possible as well through sideloading. The Fire has a 16WH Li-Polymer battery with a reported use time of 8 hours. The battery is charged using the micro-B USB port.

Cobra Electronics iRadar 105 Radar, Laser, Camera Detector

Cobra’s iRadar is a fully-functional, standalone detector that provides the driver with specific voice alerts for radar and laser signals being detected. To get the full spectrum of traffic threat alerts, however, iRadar must be paired with an Android Smartphone (or in a sister product with identical cost, an Apple iOS iPhone). A free downloadable application allows iRadar to use the smartphone touchscreen as a surrogate display via Bluetooth. The GPS- enabled application also provides a map with regularly updated warnings of upcoming speed and red-light cameras and allows the user to control settings and log alert history.

The Nook Color is the third iteration of the Nook e-reader family from Barnes & Noble. The new device has 8 GB of internal memory capable of storing 6,000 books, and is further expandable via a miniSD card slot. Font size and color are both adjustable, and a built-in media player supports audio and video. The device comes with several preloaded applications and supports Internet browsing via WiFi.

The latest Amazon Kindle (model D00701) is identical in all outward appearances to the previous Kindle 2.0 (see TechInsights Report #15000-090305-BBf). The previous model uses CDMA, while the latest model employs HSDPA and 3G wireless global coverage with fallback to EDGE/GPRS. Although the battery capacity for both models is identical, the latest model claims an increase in reading time between charges from four days to one week with wireless turned on. Both claim two weeks with wireless turned off, indicating a more efficient wireless system in the latest model.

Amazon Kindle DX Wireless eBook

Expanding on the display enhancement of the Kindle 2.0 along with moving the controls to one side, the Amazon Kindle DX features a display size of 9.7” to the Kindle 2.0’s 6” screen. Still using a 16-level electrophorectic E Ink display, the reader now features an orientation-sensitive auto-rotating image. Also a notable improvement, the new DX holds more than 3,500 books versus the 2.0’s book capacity of 1,500. The DX has a native PDF reader which is an advantage over the 2.0 where PDF files require conversion. The Kindle DX still has the thickness of most magazines along with Whispersync, text-to-speech, and a QWERTY keyboard.

Amazon does not lists any data as to battery life, however, they do say the DX will allow you to read for days at a time between battery charges.

** Note that this report is not a full product teardown. Because of significant overlap in design, the Kindle DX's Block Diagram, Power Measurements, and BOM are believed to be very similar to those of the Amazon Kindle 2.0. This report provides the Kindle DX IC BOM only along with a cataloging of the differences in components and estimates of their cost impact relative to the Kindle 2.0 baseline. **

Located just below the right earbud of the headphones is the three-button remote control for the playback functions: volume up; a multi-function button to pause music, skip forward, and skip back (press 1, 2, and 3 times, respectively); and volume down.

Apple Gen6.5 iPod Classic Media Player

The 2008 update to the iPod Classic (we're callling it Gen6.5) has some displacements on component set and settles on a single 120GB capacity based around a 1.8" hard disk drive (HDD) for storage. External look and feel remains very similar down to use of a 2.5" LCD, though a fully-metal case now surrounds the electronics versus the plastic/metal enclosures of the predecessors. As one of the longest-running members of the iPod family, it will be interesting to see if always-sliding NAND prices make the Gen6.5 Classic design the end of the line for Apple HDD players.

Reported to be the world’s first satellite-only messenger, Spot is a hand-held personal GPS locator. GPS tracking is accomplished through the global GPS satellite network and uplink signals (with GPS coordinates) are sent to Globalstar’s 48-satellite constellation. Emergency beacons are routed to the GEOS Emergency Response Center and non-emergency beacons can be sent to other users to indicate an ‘all’s well’ or position fix where one can be tracked by Google Maps for locating the user. Spot has four modes of operation: “911” for life-threatening emergencies, “Help” for emergency assistance, “Check In” for letting others know that all is well, and “Track Progress,” which sends location data to a Spot account every 10 minutes for up to 24 hours. Spot is capable of working most anywhere in the world where a clear view of the sky is available and comes in a ruggedized waterproof case which floats. It has a reported standby battery life of 12 months using two “AA” Lithium batteries. Spot is shipping in the US and Europe as of early 2008.

Reportedly, it is also equipped with better noise reduction and echo cancellation. Weighing just 9.1 grams, this headset uses Bluetooth 2.0 Technology. A volume control button and a multi-function button are the only controls on the unit. The multi-function button handles pairing and all phone-related duties. Samsung uses a small jewel-style case for charging the 3.7V Li-ion battery. Reported talk time is 3.5 hours with an 80 hour standby.
