Other features include a 5MP camera with dual LED flash, autofocus, and up to 25fps video recording; VGA web camera; TV-Out (PAL/NTSC); A-GPS; WiFi 802.11b/g; Stereo Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR; and integrated FM transmitter.

Research In Motion (RIM) extends its Blackberry line to include, for the first time, a touchscreen-based smartphone introduced in Europe as the Storm 9500. The Storm 9500 is similar to the previously reviewed Storm 9530 (Report #11000-081202-BCd), the exception that the 9500 does not include support for CDMA 800/1900MHz or EV-DO Rev. A. The display panel rests atop an internal button, allowing the display itself to behave as an Enter key when pressed to verify a highlighted touchscreen selection. Despite the break with traditional RIM styling, the phone retains the business-centric capabilities that Blackberry users have come to expect in a 3G smartphone, including HSPA data support, GPS with maps, and a set of mobile office applications.

Nokia extends its reach deeper into emerging markets with the Nokia 1325 CDMA 850Mhz phone. As with most low-end phones, the 1325 is a single-band, no-frills candy-bar style phone that supports text messaging and includes several preloaded JAVA-based games. It also offers a choice of wallpapers, backgrounds, and ringtones. The user interface consists of a 1.35-inch CSTN display, a basic set of navigation keys, and an alphanumeric (plus Hindi text characters on the version examined here) keypad. One notable difference is the choice of UIM, the CDMA equivalent of a SIM card, which allows for a more seamless upgrade to higher-end phones and potentially enables carriers to feature the international roaming capabilities available to the UIM platform. The 1325 also has a small speaker, separate from the earpiece, that provides the hands-free capability that is absent from many low-end phones. With 3.5 hours talk time and 156 hours standby claimed, this 70-gram package handily meets the basic requirements of the “Talk ‘n Text" market segment.

Samsung SGH-B100 Dual-Band GSM Phone

With a diminutive 1.53" CSTN display, the Samsung SGH-B100 immediately hints at its niche: a low-cost phone for low-end and emerging markets. The simple candy bar format houses a GSM 900/1800 phone, along with a fairly standard set of basic features such as voice recorder, calculator, and world clock. For units shipped to India, both English and Hindi characters are supported in text messaging, and an enhanced alarm feature serves as a unique market-specific "prayer clock." In another market-driven touch for India, where the unit is also known as the "Guru 100", the embedded polyphonic ringtones are Bollywood-themed. A single JAVA-based game, "Snowball Fight", is also included. Weighing in at just over 75 grams, the SGH-B100 reportedly delivers 9 hours' talk time from the included 3.7V Li-Ion Battery.
